Sixth-grade student hit while crossing Lewis Ave.
By SCOTT NEINAS
An Ida Middle School student was in critical condition this morning after a car struck her as she tried to catch a school bus on Lewis Ave. just south of Lulu Rd., police said. Monroe County sheriff's deputies said McKenzie Orde, a 12-year-old sixth-grader, had missed her bus shortly after 7 a.m. Knowing that the bus made a return trip on the other side of the street, she apparently was crossing the road to board the bus on its northbound route. A Chrysler Concorde, driven by an elderly woman, struck her in the southbound lane, police said. McKenzie had been treated in Toledo Hospital's operating room and was listed in critical condition at press time this morning. Ida firefighters responded to the scene and prepared McKenzie for the helicopter rescue. McKen-zie is the stepdaughter of a member of the Ida Town-ship Volunteer Fire Department, although the firefighter is out of town. "They're taking it pretty hard," said Ed Werten-berger, Ida's fire chief. Deputies Tim Garbo, Brian Angerer, Ken Booker, Louis Galloro and Doug Bender are investigating the crash. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the sheriff's department at 240-7560 or 243-7070. İMonroe Evening News 2002
