Ida graduate waiting for deployment to Iraq or Kuwait

Army Reserves Capt. Bill Curry is stationed in Missouri. By RAY KISONAS RAISINVILLE TOWNSHIP n Karen Curry of Iowa brought the kids to Monroe County so she can be with her husband's family for emotional support while they prepare for the war to hit home. Capt. Bill Curry, Ida High School Class of 1987, is in Missouri waiting for his deployment. As an electrical engineer, Capt. Curry's services will be needed to help build roads and buildings in Iraq or Kuwait. "I have faith in God and I am proud of him," said his mother, Ann Curry, of Raisinville Township. "I'm confident he's doing what he has to do for all of us." Capt. Curry, the son of Bill and Ann Curry, is oldest of seven and the only family member in the service. He has been in the Army Reserves for more than 10 years and joined so he could pay for his college because, basically, he's one of seven kids and needed the financial help. But he understood the responsibilities when joining and was dedicated to the service. He moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he met his wife, Karen, at church. They married and have two small children. While helping raise his family, Capt. Curry was working on his master's degree in electrical engineering and had a career as an engineer with the Rockwell Collins firm in Iowa. Then the war started. Although his main reason for joining the Reserves was to help pay for college, Capt. Curry was not about to ignore his role as a soldier as difficult as it may be. "He's proud to be a part of it but he's sad to be away from his family," his wife said. "He's a person of integrity and he's willing to meet those challenges with honor and courage. He's not overly afraid." Capt. Curry, 33, is in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, preparing and training. He is one of 600 members of the 389th Battalion. He left March 1 and Mrs. Curry last saw her husband March 19 when she and the kids waved good-bye. "I'm a single parent at the moment," she said from the Curry home. "The most difficult thing is we're best friends and one in spirit and I miss my husband. Emotionally it's hard." The kids are doing okay, she said. Caleb is 2 ½ years old and Joy is eight months old. Mrs. Curry shows videos of their dad and Caleb tells his mother that he misses and wants his father. But, Mrs. Curry said, she distracts them. "They're young enough where if you surround them with people and love they'll be okay," she said. "I have lots of support." Mrs. Curry is from Iowa and her parents are nearby for her. She also has her church family and, of course, the Currys. She packed up the kids and made the 8 1/2 nhour drive to Monroe County where she and the kids will stay and visit. In the meantime, Capt. Curry continues to train and wait for his deployment, which is almost certain. And family members will lean on each other to help them through. "I pray that he doesn't have to go to the front lines," his mother said. "But I absolutely understand that this is a necessary war. It's a job that has to be done."
